Read, Reading, Listen, Listening-The Journey Continues

I don’t understand people who don’t like to read. Reading transports you to other worlds, times, stories, characters, etc….I like getting so lost in a book that I feel a bit hazy when I come up for air. It doesn’t matter if I’m reading or listening, I can be transported whether I’m actually reading or listening to a book. This month most of these books had me enthralled. I really liked them all but a few took me out of my own world and into theirs.

The Leftover Woman

Book-reading

This was the one book that did not enthrall me but I have a feeling that is more to do with the frustrations I had with Boundless. However, I liked it enough that once the issues were worked out I went back to it. I read Searching for Sylvie Lee by this author a few years back and thoroughly enjoyed it. This story was just as fascinating though the writing felt a bit simplistic. It’s still worth reading though.

Looking for Jane

Book-Listening

This was one of the books that had me in a chokehold! This story is so compelling and the performance (listen) was utter perfection. There are some twists and turns that I most certainly did not anticipate but they add something brilliant to the story. This book is about a network, The Jane Network which started in Chicago when abortion was not illegal. This network of doctors, nurses and volunteers worked together to provide safe abortions to women in need.

The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store

Book-Listening

Another book that had me in a choke hold! And another book that I listened to where the reading performance is simply wonderful. The story is beautiful, heartbreaking, maddening and sweet. This book ended up on a bunch of best books of 2023 and I am not surprised. Sometimes when books end up on that list, I skeptically think it’s because it’s supposed to be good. But this one really is good and I highly recommend it.

Never Lie

Book-reading

It feels like it’s been awhile since I read a psychological thriller and this one was pretty good. I know that this author has a couple of pretty popular books out right now but I haven’t read them. Prime reading gave me this one for free so I decided to take a stab at it. It is your typical thriller with lots of twists and turns and several that I did not see coming at all. I read this one and I must admit that I actually gasped out loud a couple of times. This is my first read by this author but it definitely will not be my last.

All the Sinners Bleed

Book-Listening

Another book that I could not stop listening to. I have listened to 2 other books by this author and loved them. The narrator, Adam Lazarre-White is the narrator for the books I’ve listened to. His rich, deep voice add to the intrigue and mystery. These books are not easy listening; they are disturbing and violent and scary but oh so very intriguing. The other two books are Blacktop Wasteland and Razorblade Tears. At their core though, all of these books are about relationships, good, bad and complicated.

Another 5 books for this month. I’ll keep plugging along and see where I can up for numbers so that I can meet my goal this year.
