Time to share which books I’ve read during the last month. I’m a person who likes books that tell a good story and have characters that I can care about. I don’t have to like the character but they have to have something to do with the story that matters. I don’t care for characters who exist to only drive home a plot point.
Looking for Jane

This book is a do over for me and I’m not mad about it. I read this on my own last year and re-read for my bookclub. The characters in this book are meaningful and no story is wasted. This book takes place in Canada but “The Jane Network” originated in Chicago at a time when abortion was neither safe nor legal. The Jane Network existed to help make abortion at least safe. Very intriguing story and worth the read.
Our Darkest Night

We read The Gown last month by this same author. I enjoyed that book so much that I was very excited to read this one. This story is not as pleasant as it deals with Nazis up close and personal. However, the story ultimately won me over as I found myself rooting for the family. My one complaint and I won’t give a spoiler but at one point it was a bit too “hollywood” for me. It doesn’t ruin anything and I was glad that it worked out the way it did.
What You Leave Behind

I interrupt these previous stories that fall into historical fiction and bring you back to psychological thrillers!! I read this fairly new to me author recently and I read her 2 books back to back. This is her latest story and again it did not disappoint. Lots of intrigue and questions. Interestingly, while this is a psychological thriller, it actually has some historical fiction elements.
The Lost Bookshop

This book is described as charming and uplifting and I could not agree more. The concept is really interesting and it’s a really fun story. There are some magical elements in this book which is something that doesn’t usually resonate with me but here it works. This story is a nice diversion after some dark and scary books.
The Little Old Lady Who Broke All The Rules

As we know, I love books about old people and this story is so much fun. I liked it so much that I am currently knee deep into book 2 of 4. The series is called the League of Pensioners and takes place mainly in Sweden. These seniors live in an assisted living facility and are unhappy with some of the changes that are made when a new owner purchases their building. They devise a plan of sorts to create a better life for themselves. These seniors are smart and irreverent and still have lots of life to live. One of the interesting concepts in this story is that because they are old people tend to overlook them allowing all sorts of fun and interesting things to happen.
That’s where we are for now. Let’s continue with the wrap up of the number of books read so far and the number left to read.
