I’ve been working diligently to make a dent in my reading journey. My goal is to read 65 books this year and I’m not sure that I’ll make it. Be that as it may, I’m going to continue on.
Here are the books I recently finished.
Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone
This is a very interesting book and story. I can’t give many details without giving away the story but I will say I was quite frustrated listening to this book because the narrator is unreliable. You don’t know until the end what is true and what is conjecture. Through listening to this book, I realized that I don’t care for “unreliable narrators.” I want the person telling the story to be honest about what they know or don’t know or what their speculating about. I started to enjoy the book at the end when the entire story is told which lead to everything making sense.
Spirit Crossing
I have read other books by this author and have thoroughly enjoyed them. This one is no different. In all of the books I’ve read, they always feature indigenous characters as main characters. There is also always some stress between the white and indigenous worlds. This is a murder mystery where all sorts of tactics are used to investigate including other wordly ones. One of the main characters is apparently featured in several other books though I haven’t read those yet.
All Her Little Secrets
This is a new author for me and I heard about her book on a list of good psychological thrillers and/or mysteries. I believe this is her first book and it does not disappoint. The characters are real and the story is frightening-physically and emotionally. I liked it so much that I read her 2nd book.
Anywhere You Run
Another very good book by this author. A couple of the characters from the 1st book appear here but not in a significant way. This main character was also mentioned in the 1st book but you wouldn’t know she’d have her own story. This story is very different from the first only in that it takes place in the south and in the past. In some ways, it’s a precursor (but not prequel) to the first book.
The Many Lives of Mama Love
This book was recommended to me by a friend. It is an autobiography which I don’t normally read or listen to. However, this book hooked me from the start. It is a graphic description of drug abuse, the legal system and redemption. It was interesting to see how the legal system works from an inside perspective. I found it maddening that even once people have done their jail time, finished their probation that they can’t actually finish probation until all of the fees and fines are paid. I’m not sure what the answer is but this feels a lot like the continuation of a prison/jail sentence but not for a crime. The author reads the book and it definitely adds authenticity to the story.
Think Twice
Again, this is an author that I’ve read before and have enjoyed. This book was also enjoyable and the story was quite compelling. Again, I can’t give too much detail without giving away too much.
Girl, Forgotten
I guess this post is mostly books of authors that I’ve read recently. Psychological thriller at its finest. This book apparently comes after the book Pieces of Her which is currently a show on Netflix. I haven’t yet read it but I plan to. You don’t necessarily have to read Pieces of Her first but there are references to it that are likely helpful in understanding the main character in this book.
Twenty Years Later
Here’s another book by an author that I’ve been enjoying lately. Another small town psychological thriller. This one also does not disappoint. So far I’ve read The Girl Who Was Taken and Long Time Gone by this author. One of the things I like about these books is that characters from other books show up. There’s always a connection to a small town in South Carolina.
September was a very good month of reading for me. I’m very happy that I was able to break the 5-6 books read for the month. I’m still not sure if I’ll make it to 65 but I’m giving it the old college try.
Reading Journey: Goal is 65 books for the year
September: 8 books read, 47 total books read for the year; 18 books left to read
Wish me luck!!
