Upcoming Project-Pantry

Pantry project blog header

So while I continue to work on my guest room, I am thinking about what I will do next.  I am definitely going to finish up this guest room project before starting on the next one, but that doesn’t stop my brain from thinking about what’s next.

I had said previously that I usually start thinking about the next project while finishing up the current one.  I think that my brain starts to crave the creative process. The end of a project is usually more details and less creativity so I think it’s a natural progression.
I also start thinking about what’s next because I find that while I’m working on one area that another area starts to get on my nerves and I want to dive in and fix it!

While I’ve not thought through everything yet, I have decided that my next project will be my pantry.  This is not a large space, in fact, it’s rather small, even tiny.  But my plans are ambitious! It’s another space where I have accepted it as it was given to me. It has worked out for the last 20 years but now I want something different and more workable. Pantries come in all spaces and sizes but keeping any pantry organized can be a challenge.

What I’m Working With

This is the space from the front. You can see that it’s pretty small though it is convenient as it’s right next to the kitchen.

And now…….the space

The space is quite small but there is also a ton of space lost because of the wire shelf. It’s a good shelf which would work really well in a garage or many other spaces. But inside of this closet, you lose space.

The shelf is a typical wire shelf. One of the issues is that items don’t stay steady on the shelves so I’ve had to add this blue shelf liner. There is a shelf that came with the closet which has been great for holding cookbooks, extra items as well as for these hanging baskets. I’ve put bread, taco shells and other bread type items in them.

The picture on the right is taken from underneath the shelf. It’s also important to not the the shelf legs cuts off space on the shelf as well as wastes space inside of the closet.
And because of the limited space, I have to “find” space for items which means stacking or laying something on top of something else.

The Not Fully Formed Plan

So, what is the plan? What do I want to do?
The shelf is definitely going. I want to use ALL of the space in the closet. I’m also going to remove the existing shelf. With that I will have a cavernous hole to work with. And, the plan is to build shelves from the back to the front.

I’m thinking about something like these. The photo on the left is more of a cabinet than a closet. The photo on the right is more like my pantry. I think I want my shelves to be deeper though.

This photo on the right is more of what I’m thinking. The shelves use up most of the space but there also appears to be a bit of space to step inside. I also like having some floor space for large or heavy items like extra sodas. I love these containers with the labeling on the right photo; it’s so fun looking. Of course, I look fun but I’m really looking for function. I have no doubt though that some things will definitely get the label treatment.

At this point, all of this is in my head. I’ve done no measurements or goggling. And again, because I am bound and determined to get the guest room done first, I don’t even have a projected start date for this project. I have too much left to do in the guest room that I can’t give this project any more attention than I have already.
