It’s done!!! The laundry closet makeover is done!! Fair warning…..this post is picture heavy. It starts in November 2023 when my new machines were delivered to now when the last element was finally received.
This was a fairly labor intensive project and I needed help to move my new machines out of place and then back into place so that I could do all that needed to be done.
Let’s start at the beginning-
BEGINNING
My laundry closet is in a very small space-so small that my machines can’t face front; they have to be turned sideways! This has always annoyed me and I had hoped that my new machines might be able to face front but again the room is just too small.
The new machines arrived the Monday before Thanksgiving.
I love my new machines and I’ve been very happy while learning to use them. My previous machine was at least 25 years old and it worked okay but it was clearly time to move on. There were several settings I could not use including the largest load setting. My laundry gets done so much faster now and I have so many cleaning options many that I don’t even know how to use them or what they do!
THE MIDDLE
Once the new machines were in, there were some decisions to be made. I knew that I wanted to do some type of wall treatment but was undecided if I just wanted to paint or do something else. After a lot of Pinterest searching, I decided on paint and wallpaper.
I knew that I wanted to do something fun and vibrant since the space is behind closed doors so it won’t clash with anything else. These were my two choices and I ended up going with Beauty Queen.
So I painted the slats first because I knew that I didn’t have to be exact because I would be adding the wallpaper.
One of the reasons that the machines needed to be moved was so I could paint all of the way to the end of slats. The space is very tight and there was no way I would be able to reach. My neighbor and friend, Michyle helped me to move the machines out and then back into place!
Another design choice was storage. I already shared this in a previous blog post. I needed something tall and pretty skinny and found the perfect item on Wayfair.
Before adding it to the space though, I had to wallpaper the closet. This was my first time using wallpaper and I was not looking forward to it.
Again, I went for something wild that was complementary to the pink color! I liked the pattern but I also liked that the repeating did not need to match completely. I despise measuring and cutting because it stresses me out. I decided to do each panel separately because I thought it would be easier. If I had to do it again, I might do the side panel separately and then the other panels lengthwise/horizontal. It can get a bit unwieldy though trying smooth the paper while keeping the other part from tangling! This is a vinyl wallpaper that works on smooth or textured walls. I ordered it from the Home Depot.
Initially, I was going to stop the wallpaper where the slats stop, and then paint the wall behind the machines. However, I decided to go ahead and finish out the room with wall paper.
After the wallpaper was done, it was time to change out the light, put the storage tower in it’s spot and ultimately move the machines back into their spot.
Yep, that is a chandelier in my laundry closet!! In addition to being totally cute, it lights up the space really well! Hopefully, you can see the on/off switch for the light on the 3rd slat. I used a command strip to hold it into place. Additionally, the shelf with it’s white shelves and gold accent is also a nice complement to the space.
MORE DECOR
Don’t look now, but you can see where my wallpaper ends! This is the area where I keep household tools so I wasn’t concerned about the wallpaper not going all the way to the floor. I did however, find these decals at the Dollar Tree that I thought added some fun decor to the back of the room.
It was time now to work on putting the items back into their space while also using the wall space to store items. Instead of having everything on the floor, I hung some items on the wall.
And then it was time to make adjustments and figure out where everything else would go.
Time for a little decoration! I had chosen a rug for the front of the space but Amazon couldn’t get it to me. So I did more searching and finally found one that worked for me and the space.
I also like having something personal in this space. I used to have lots of sports stuff and now I have lots of pins and pictures. Lots of the pins are sports related though!!
Here is a close up of the light! It is made from acrylic, light weight and was very easy to put together.
And the rug finally arrived completing this project!!
THE END
And there you have it!! It took awhile because of some timing issues but once I got moving I didn’t stop until it was done. I had promised myself that I wouldn’t move on to the next project until the current one was finished. This alleviates having 4 projects 90% completed!!
The other thing I learned and had to accept is that you have to work with the space you have and not the space that you want. This space is large enough to have machines face the side and not the front. I could not have the space I had envisioned including perhaps having a cabinet against the wall or having the machines moved all the way to the back wall. But, I have a space that I love, I was able to get new machines and other new stuff for the space. I am thankful for the space I have and I learned to appreciate it while I was working on it!
Next up is the guest room closet-the stationary side, organizing the whole closet and working on the guest room. For now, let’s enjoy this completed project!!
