Books-Reading and Listening

Book-reading header

Getting caught up on some other posts. I have continued to read even while on my blog vacation. I have 6 books to share today and another 6 in a future post. Even with listening to 1 book while reading another, I can’t seem to break the maximum of 6 books per month! I need a couple more books per month to get to my goal but I’ll keep trying. I’m enjoying most of the books and will continue reading.

THE HOUSE OF EVE

the house of eve book

What a fantastic book! I couldn’t listen to it fast enough. It’s highly sought after so I was on the waiting list for a long time. When it became available, I snapped it right up. The book is about the lives of 2 young African-American women who go to great lengths to have the lives that they want. They are from different socioeconomic groups so their choices, opportunities, and challenges come in different forms and have different consequences.

DID YOU HEAR ABOUT KITTY KARR?

did you hear about kitty karr book

Another fantastic book with African-American characters. I read this book and The House of Eve at the same time and was tortured the whole time. Though the books take place in different times and deal with different issues, the theme of life being stupid hard for Black women for no other reason than they are Black women just sat with me. I definitely recommend this book as well but maybe don’t read/listen to them at the same time!

BY THE BOOK

Another book with African-American leads but this one is an easy read. It is light hearted, fun yet still very smart read. It was a nice break after the last 2 books with such heavy topics.

SUMMER ON SAG HARBOR

summer of sag harbor book

While I like reading books about all types of people and cultures, this month has been full of African-American leads. And, the books have all been pretty good. This is the 2nd book by The View host, Sunny Hostin. The first book which I read last year was Summer on the Bluffs. I enjoyed it as well. This book focuses on one of the characters from the first book, introduces some new characters and also answers some questions from the 1st book. The other thing that I appreciate about these books is that they tell the story of this real place where upper middle class and rich Black families have homes and go to them during the summer. Some of the older folks live there full time but many Black families have memories of spending their summers on Sag Harbor.

THE SPACE BETWEEN US

the space between us book

I listened this book for one of my book clubs and I’m so glad I did. This book has so much sadness and tragedy but also love and happiness. It is not an easy read and deals with the caste system and all of its evils. In spite of the difficult stories in this book, it is definitely worth reading.

THE SUMMER PLACE

the summer place book

Jennifer Weiner is an author who rarely disappoints. I have read many of her books and enjoy them. This book takes place at a summer beach house and after reading Summer on Sag Harbor and this one, I now want a summer house! This book is a pretty light summer read though it deals with a couple of heavy issues but in a light hearted way.
