Small Project-Nightstand Re-Organization

Today, I have another small project to share with you. It was not on my project list but it got to the point where I just needed to do it. Organizing small spaces like junk drawers and nightstands don’t tend to make the “to do list.” At some point, you just get tired of the mess!
The nightstand next to my bed houses all sorts of goodies-lotions, journals, scissors, socks, glasses, etc…It is a mess and has been for a long time. Since I’m in organizing mode, I thought I’d tackle this small area knowing that it would not take a long time.

BEFORE

My organizational efforts always start strong and then need some adjusting. This nightstand drawer is no different. You may be able to see that I have some things housed in containers and then other things on top.
Once again, I’m an expert at getting a lot in a small space.

night stand organizing container

I chose this container for the nightstand drawer because it had all of the different sized compartments that I figured would fit my accessories. I have to admit though that in buying this container I committed a rookie organizing mistake! I was out shopping (for something else) and saw this container. I looked at it and thought, “this will be great for my nightstand drawer.” Well, we all know that you’re supposed to measure your space before purchasing the container. I did not measure and lo and behold the container was too big for the drawer! But, there was a happy accident that you’ll see later.

DURING

Items from the nightstand

Of course, the first thing was to empty out the entire nightstand drawer. This photo is just what I’m keeping because I just threw out items as I was going through the drawer. Why do I have a pocket constitution in my bed side table? I don’t even know.
A few other items in the photo did not make the cut back into the drawer-the 2 pair of glasses and the old blood glucose testing kit.

AFTER

Nightstand-bottom level

So the happy accident is that while the container did not fit flat in the drawer, it did fit on the top! That means I actually have extra usable space! The bottom of the drawer has some socks, tools, paper and pens and a couple of manuals for my smart scale and HoomBand.

AFTER-PART 2

The container which fits at the top and slides back and forth so that I can access the items below and holds the items that I use nightly like my hand and foot creams, lip moisturizers, nail care and foot care. Everything has a spot and I have what I need close by.

I am very pleased to have another organizing project completed even if I did make a rookie mistake. Sometimes, mistakes turn out to be a better solution like in this case.
Have you ever made a mistake in a project that actually worked out in your favor?
