The Book Buffet-January Reads

Welcome to the first book reading/listening journey of 2023! As I mentioned in my reading post, I will make a valiant effort to read 70 books this year. My goal last year was 75 and I got to 62! I’ll have to really try to read more books at the beginning to middle of the year as I noticed that I tended to slow down a bit during the summer and holiday months.
This month, I kept the reading pretty light with only one thriller in the bunch. I enjoyed all of my reads in January rating them from 3.5-4.o stars.

Two Parts Sugar, One Part Murder

This book is a cozy mystery which means that there is usually more than one murder but it’s more cute than gory. I was interested in this book because the main character is a woman of color which you don’t usually find in cozy mysteries. The premise was cute, it’s an easy but enjoyable read. (3.5 stars)

Daisy Jones and The Six

This book came highly recommended by a friend in one of my book clubs. It is coming out soon as a limited series on Prime Video in March. I listened to this book and it was fantastic. The tension, sexual and otherwise comes through very clearly. There are several wonderful actors reading the roles including Jennifer Beals, Benjamin Bratt and Pablo Schreiber. I hope the series lives up to the book because these actors really brought the scenes to life. (4 stars)

The Reading List

In spite of some heavy moments and themes, this is a really delightful book. At it’s core, the book is not just about relationships but also about our relationship with books and how books can help us see the world differently and provide a space of healing and refuge. It is an emotional read and had me in my feelings. I was so sad at moments and so happy at others. (3.5 stars)

The People We Keep

This book reminds me of books by Bryn Greenwood with a young, female protagonist who has to figure out her life on her own because the adults in her world are so awful. You ache for this child to succeed and when it gets hard or she gets in her own way you want to help her. This book is a fantastic listen. There are no slow parts that lull you away from the story. (4 stars)

The Push

This was the only thriller I read this month and I am glad! This book is heavy and scary and keeps you wondering and on your toes for the entire book. It’s not your typical type of thriller but it is definitely in the thriller genre. I don’t want to give anything away so I won’t say too much. This is a book that gets you from the very beginning! (3.5 stars)
