Master Bath Update-Getting started with Painting

Master bath refresh

It’s been a little bit since I’ve done an update on my master bath refresh. I’ve made a lot of progress but there is still a lot to do. Even when I feel unmotivated, I’m trying to keep moving forward and not lose momentum.
Sometimes, I work really hard one day, all day and the next day I can barely move! These days, I’m trying to work smarter and not harder meaning that if I have a day where I do a ton of back breaking physical labor then the following day I schedule either a day off or much less physical work.
Moving on……………………………………………………………

CABINET, DOORS, DRAWERS & HARDWARE

One of the first things I did was to paint the cabinet, drawers, doors and the hardware. Generally, the painting is a fairly easy task but like all of my DIY’s, there always has to be an issue! And in this case, it is was with the hardware. I could not get one door off of the cabinet and then I could not get the hinges off of the doors!!
I tried many of the tricks the internet suggested but nothing worked. In the end, I decided to just wing it! You’ll see later how well it worked.

First up, the tools of the trade.

The cabinet frame, doors, and drawers were painted a chalk paint by Behr. I used the same color in the chalk paint that I will use on the walls, Bit of Sugar. I like using the paint in the same color but different finishes. It brings cohesion but also some complexity.
For ease, I laid down a tarp and did the painting in my living room and on the balcony.

Doing projects always involves learning lessons and this one was no different. I started painting with the cabinet frame and the drawers. I realized (too late) that I should have started with a primer since I was painting white over wood. Chalk paint covers pretty well but I feel like I wasted paint because the first coat worked as a primer.

DOORS

I did learn and did a primer coat on the cabinet doors which definitely helped me not use so much of the chalk paint.

NEXT STEPS

Painting involves a lot of………painting!

The cabinet took 4 (!) coats until I was satisfied! The drawers and doors took 3 coats.

HARDWARE

I painted the hardware a matte black. I used a spray paint from Rustoleum. This is a very easy way to change up hardware without having to purchase it all new. I chose this color because I like how matte black looks with the white chalk paint and because I chose faucets to match (stay tuned).

You’ll notice that I painted the hardware before painting the cabinet. The reason is easy-it’s much easier to paint black over white and the hinge much smaller space to have to color correct. When the white paint would inevitably get on the black hardware, it would be an easier fix.

That’s the latest update with many more to come. Up next, will be some smaller projects including getting ready to paint the wall.
