Favorites Currently Making Me Happy

I enjoy seeing these types of “favorites” posts so I thought that maybe I’d do one as well.  And if no one cares except for me, then at least I have a documented record of what I was enjoying at this particular time!

1.  The Alienist-this TNT show is based on a book of the same name by Caleb Carr. Both the book and tv show features the story of the search for a serial killer in New York City in 1896. The killer is targeting a very specific, marginalized segment of the population.  An investigative team is brought together to find the killer.  What makes this team really interesting is that it is made up of a psychologist, crime reporter and a female staff who works in the police department.

“Prior to the 20th century, person suffering from mental illness were thought to be ‘alienated,’ not only from the rest of society but from their own true natures. Those experts who studied mental pathologies were known as ‘alienists’.”
-note from the beginning of the novel.

If you enjoy works about psychology, forensics, investigation techniques and general intrigue, then this show is for you. Be forewarned-there are some very gruesome scenes.

2. Audible-I LOVE listening to books and no one is more surprised about this than me.  I did not understand the lure of listening to a book being read to you.  However, I tried it with two free credits and listened to Shonda Rimes, The Year of Yes and Mindy Kaling, Why Not Me.  I was hooked.  I have yet to listen to anything that I haven’t liked but Audible does allow you to “return” titles that you don’t like!  A few that I have loved include Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper by Phaedra Patrick and the 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson.  I am also very slowly making my way through the Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon.  This series is about 44 hours of listening each so they take time.
Most of the book are in the range of 12-16 hours which feels much more doable.
One of the benefits of listen to books is that you can get tons of other things done while listening.  My house gets lots of cleaning while I listen.

3. Podcasts-Along the same lines as audible books, I am also loving podcasts.  In fact, I listen to podcasts and books so much now that I have no idea what the new music is!  I listen to podcasts in iTunes but there are other listening services as well. My top five podcasts that I listen to without fail are:

  1. Boss Girl Creative
  2. Young House Love Has a Podcast
  3. Style Your Mind
  4. Planet Money
  5. Ear Hustle

4. Carpe Diem Planner-I am using an A5 ballet pink carpe diem planner with happy planner inserts for my home and personal planner this year.  And I am loving it.  I like having all of the information in one place.  Last year, I used two separate planners and I was finding that I was hard for me keep everything straight or to remember what I had planned and when. Of course, like many who enjoy planners, this carpe diem is not my only one.  I also use an Erin Condren for work and a big happy planner for memory keeping.  I also use my phone but I really prefer to write things down.

5.  YouTube-Back when YT first came out, I thought it was the stupidest thing I’d ever heard of.  For the life of me, I could not figure out why anyone would make videos and especially who the heck would waste time watching videos??!!  Well, the answer is ME (watching not making)!  As an avid DIYer, I find YT to be very useful in helping me figure out how to do something (or how not to do something), gathering ideas, and just finding out about new ideas, clothes and products. I have many favorite youtubers as I have so many interests. In general, I enjoy makeup videos, clothing, skin care, cleaning and of course home maintenance and repair!
While my opinion of YT has changed, there continues to be plenty of ridiculousness out there!  There is no reason to eat Tide pods, people!!
